Kerloo, the call of the crane, will beckon you to experience something unique: a tasting poured by the winemaker himself, Ryan Crane, and a collection of excellent, intriguing wines. Ryan and his wife Reneé abandoned their urban lifestyle and stable jobs and moved to Walla Walla to pursue their dream of building a winery.
Though green at first, under the tutelage of winemakers at Forgeron Cellars, Va Piano, and Trust Cellars, Ryan developed his winemaking skills and now produces engaging, even palate-challenging wines. With a focus on more uncommon varietals like Tempranillo and Grenache, Kerloo feels distinct. I enjoyed the simple, pleasant tasting room and appreciated having the winemaker himself on hand to talk to me about the wines, explain his story, his process and philosophy. All the wines are good, but I particularly loved the 2009 Garnacha for its playful nose and ease of drinking, as Ryan says, it’s a “chef ’s absolute pairing dream.”
